The historical novel follows two young men from different cultures whose unexpected friendship challenges their understanding of courage, family, and loyalty.
New York City, NY November 05, 2026 (BrightKey PR) — Author Ted Malone has announced the November 11, 2026, release of A’Viking West: The First Shore, an upmarket historical novel set during the Norse voyages to North America around the year 1000. Told through the perspectives of a young Norse voyager and an Indigenous resident, the novel explores first contact, cultural differences, and the personal consequences of encountering an unfamiliar world.

The story follows Einar Tryggvason, who travels west from Greenland hoping to establish himself as a warrior and earn his father’s respect. On the unfamiliar shores of North America, he encounters Actaudin, a young man whose life is shaped by the traditions, relationships, and responsibilities of his Indigenous community.
Although they come from different backgrounds, the two gradually develop an unexpected friendship. Their relationship becomes increasingly complicated as both confront family expectations, cultural misunderstandings, and questions about their responsibilities to their respective communities.
Rather than presenting the Norse arrival solely as an adventure of exploration, Malone examines the encounter from both perspectives. Einar must reconsider his understanding of strength and honor, while Actaudin faces difficult choices as the newcomers introduce uncertainty into the world he has always known.
Exploring the Human Side of First Contact
The novel combines historical adventure with character-driven storytelling, using alternating first-person narratives to examine how individuals respond when unfamiliar cultures meet.
The story follows the dangers of a westward voyage, the uncertainty of arriving in unfamiliar territory, and the personal conflicts that emerge as Einar and Actaudin attempt to understand one another despite differences in language, traditions, and expectations.
Proposed author quote — subject to Ted Malone’s approval:
I wanted to explore first contact through the experiences of people on both sides of the encounter. Einar and Actaudin come from different worlds, but each faces questions about family, loyalty, and the kind of person he wants to become. Their story is about learning to see beyond the assumptions they have inherited.
Malone’s longstanding interest in Viking Age history informs the fictional setting and characters. While the novel draws inspiration from the historical Norse presence in North America, its central relationships and events are imagined rather than presented as a definitive historical reconstruction.
A Story of Identity, Family, and Competing Loyalties
At the center of A’Viking West: The First Shore are two young men confronting different expectations of courage.
For Einar, recognition as a warrior initially defines his ambitions. His encounters with Actaudin gradually challenge his assumptions about honor, strength, and the people his community considers outsiders.
For Actaudin, the arrival of the Norse presents new uncertainties that affect his relationships, responsibilities, and understanding of his place within his community.
Through their experiences, the novel examines cultural understanding, personal identity, and the tensions between individual choices and inherited obligations.
Intended for readers of historical and literary fiction, A’Viking West: The First Shore also introduces themes that Malone plans to explore in the continuing A’Viking West series.
